Monty came to Mason County in January 2003 when he was hired to take over as juvenile court prosecutor. A practicing attorney since 1994, Monty came to Mason County with five and a half years prior experience as a prosecutor plus time as an Assistant Attorney General and criminal defense lawyer. Monty’s duties in the Prosecutor’s Office quickly expanded to include truancy, family court, adult felonies, drug court and appeals. In June 2006, Monty took over as Chief Civil Deputy, and became Chief Deputy in February 2009.
As the ranking attorney in the Prosecutor’s Office, second only to the elected Prosecutor, Monty provides legal advice and representation to all County departments and offices, reviews all incoming felony cases and assigns those cases to deputy prosecutors, and supervises the various departments in the Prosecutor’s Office. Since 2006, Monty has helped guide the County to compliance with the Growth Management Act and grappled with the unique legal problems brought on by the worst economic crunch in recent memory.
Monty is admitted to practice law before the Washington Supreme Court, US District Court (E. District of WA), and the United States Supreme Court. There are over 60 appellate opinions, published and unpublished, where Monty is attorney of record. Monty has argued cases before administrative boards/hearings officers including Labor and Industries, Public Employees Relations Commission, Growth Management Board, Shorelines Hearings Board, DSHS, and the WA State Board of Clemency and Pardons. He is also Alternate Director to the WA Counties Risk Pool for Mason County.
Monty received his law degree from Gonzaga University School of Law in Spokane, WA, holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in History from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA, and also attended Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa.
